Follow Us. Boxing is back on the fitness agenda. Or maybe it never left? Combining an intense cardio workout with total body conditioning, it's one of the most effective ways to improve speed, strength and stamina. New classes are cropping up in several gyms but if you want minimum fuss and maximum results then The Cut, one of Equinox's flagship classes, ditches gloves and bags for a fast-paced minute workout. Don't be fooled into thinking no punchbags or gloves makes it any easier. During the class we used light weights for some of the boxing drills which included jabs, crosses, hooks, body shots and uppercuts. According to The Cut's co-creator Christa DiPaolo, using the weights instead of gloves makes you more aware of your hand placement and so helps you form a better technique, and avoid injury. There's also no hiding behind a big punchbag. Our instructor Caitlin McGowan took us through the drills slowly at first, giving us time to pick up the routine; then we repeated them, sometimes adding defensive moves in the mix.

This is a full body workout. Yes, you will be punching a lot with the weights. It helps to have a sense of rhythm in this class, since the movements are on the beat and fast-paced. My first time ever taking The Cut was with Eddie back in January. That time, the class was small maybe 10 students at most , and I was totally lost. At that time, I definitely felt like I could have used more individual attention. You can tell that he has real boxing experience and is advising from that perspective as well as a fitness one. This class is a great full-body workout.
